Overview:

We are seeking a skilled and passionate Veterinary Surgeon to join our team. The Veterinary Surgeon will play a key role in providing medical care to the animals in our shelter, including performing surgeries, conducting examinations, administering treatments, and overseeing the health management of our resident animals. This position offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of animals and contribute to the mission of our organization. Your responsibilities include:

Responsibilities:

  • Provide emergency medical care to injured or sick animals.
  • Excellent diagnostic abilities, preventing illnesses, injuries, and diseases in animals, and proficiency in developing treatment plans for a variety of medical conditions.
  • Experience in shelter medicine, general practice, and small animal surgery, including spaying, neutering, soft tissue procedures, orthopedic surgeries, etc.
  • Strong clinical skills and surgical knowledge across a range of veterinary specialties, including surgery, anesthesia, dentistry, and preventive care.
  • Monitoring rescued animals, including those in isolation or quarantine, for signs of illness or abnormal behavior.
  • Understanding the physical and behavioral traits of domestic animals.
  • Administer medications, vaccinations, and other necessary medical interventions as needed.
  • Conducting regular Complete Blood Count (CBC) and Liver Function Tests (LFT) & Renal Function Tests (RFT) for inpatient and permanent shelter animals regularly and interpret the results.
  • Understanding the fundamental principles and methodologies of clinical diagnosis.
  • Performing surgical procedures on rescued animals, including spaying, neutering, soft tissue procedures, orthopedic surgeries, etc. for the health and well-being of the animals.
  • Conducting pre-operative examinations to assess the suitability of animals for surgery and ensure their readiness for anesthesia.
  • Providing post-operative care and monitoring the recovery of surgical patients, including pain management and wound care.
  • Developing and implementing written medical treatment protocols to ensure high standards of care for all shelter animals.
  • Developing and executing goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards for medical personnel.
  • Collaborating with shelter staff to develop surgical schedules and prioritize cases based on medical urgency and shelter capacity.
  • Participating in the development and implementation of medical protocols to ensure high standards of care for all shelter animals.
  • Communicating effectively with shelter staff, volunteers, and the public to provide information and education about surgical procedures and post-operative care.
  • Advising on the appropriate use of surgical interventions and treatment options for animals with medical conditions or injuries.
  • Providing food and administering supplements to inpatient pets based on medical needs, recording details in treatment records.
  • Assess the physical condition and behavior of animals post-recovery to determine their readiness for release.
  • Provide guidance and support to pet parents or caregivers on the proper care and management of released pets.
  • Conduct post-release follow-ups to monitor the welfare of released animals and ensure they remain healthy and safe.
  • Participating in shelter outreach programs, community events, and educational initiatives to promote responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.
  • Collaborating with other veterinary professionals, including specialists and consultants, as needed to provide comprehensive care for shelter animals.
  • Participating in continuing education and professional development activities to stay current with advancements in veterinary medicine and surgery.
  • Contributing to the overall mission and goals of the animal shelter by providing compassionate and quality veterinary care to all animals in need.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations (AWBI, state and municipal animal health laws), standards of care, and veterinary medical ethics in all aspects of shelter operations and animal care.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records for all shelter animals, including examination findings, diagnoses, treatments, surgeries, vaccinations, and follow-up care.
  • Oversee inventory management of medical supplies, medications, and equipment, and ensure proper storage and usage.
  • Implement and oversee health management protocols for all animals in the shelter, including vaccination schedules, parasite control, and disease prevention measures.
  • Collaborating with the management regarding euthanasia decisions for animals suffering from serious illness or severe injury.
  • Coordinating with medical staff or subordinates to ensure completion of medical tasks daily.
  • Monitoring, maintaining, and ensuring quality control of drugs used within the shelter and in the field.
  • Maintaining a clean and safe environment, including proper sterilization of kennels, wards, equipment, and adherence to infection control protocols.
  • Performing routine operations and maintenance on medical machinery, equipment, and devices to meet standards.

Performing other related duties as required to support the operation of the animal shelter and the welfare of its residents.

Surgical Techniques & Skills :

  • Adheres to aseptic/sterile techniques while scrubbing, gowning, and gloving
  • Adheres to a sterile field throughout the surgical process
  • Understands Spay/Neuter Alliance theory on incision placement
  • Performs efficient and concise entrance into the abdomen
  • Performs safe and correct square knots
  • Performs safe and gentle spay hook technique
  • Performance of the ovarian cutaway technique in canine patients
  • Performance of the ovarian pedicle tie in feline patients
  • Usage of the modified Miller’s knot, able to set using carmalt
  • Performance of scrotal neuter techniques in both adult and pediatric patients
  • Completes efficient, safe, and attractive closures, utilizing cruciate sutures
  • Demonstrates principles of gentle tissue handling

Other Critical Skills:

  • Competently performs and teaches CPR and other emergency measures
  • Effectively critiques breaks in sterility
  • Effectively critiques and suggests additional disease control measures
  • Understands and can explain anesthesia
  • Understands and practices low-stress animal handling

Knowledge of:

  • Proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Office, email, and presentation software.
  • Familiarity with typical office protocols, methods, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and adherence to safe working procedures.
  • Competency in mathematical operations, including proportion calculation, percentage determination, volume measurement, ratio assessment, and fraction computation.
  • Skill in maintaining precise record-keeping.

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree (preferred) in veterinary surgery from an accredited veterinary school.
  • Valid license to practice veterinary medicine and surgery in the state or jurisdiction of employment.
  • Board certification or specialized training in veterinary surgery is preferred but not required.

Required Background, Experience and Skills:

  • Total 5+ years of expertise in performing routine and complex surgical procedures on small animals, such as spaying, neutering, orthopedic surgeries, soft tissue procedures, emergency surgeries, etc.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in conducting research within the field of veterinary medicine, with a focus on analyzing data, interpreting findings, and contributing to advancements in the field.
  • Excellent and comprehensive understanding of surgical techniques, anesthesia protocols, and post-operative care procedures to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Demonstrated expertise in shelter medicine practices, including disease control, population management, and comprehensive veterinary care for shelter animals.
  • Proven competency in general veterinary practice, with a strong foundation in diagnosing and treating a variety of medical conditions in small animals.
  • Commitment to continuing education and professional development to stay current with advancements in veterinary medicine, surgery etc.
  • Experience in shelter medicine, general practice, or a related field is preferred
  • Strong knowledge of animal anatomy, physiology, behavior etc.
  • Proficiency in managing animals, encompassing the handling of aggressive or feral ones, with safety, correctness, and compassion.
