Overview:
The Legal Advocate is responsible for providing legal counsel and advocacy services to support the mission of the animal shelter and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations pertaining to animal welfare and corporate law. This role involves representing the shelter’s interests in legal matters, providing guidance on animal-related and corporate law, legislation and policies, and advocating for the rights and protection of animals in the community.
Responsibilities:
- Legal Counselling- Provide legal counsel and representation to the animal shelter on matters related to animal welfare, shelter operations, and compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
- Provide Advise- Advise shelter management on legal risks, rights, and obligations concerning animal care, passive adoption processes, and facility management.
- Research and Analysis- Conduct legal research and analysis to support decision-making and ensure compliance with local, state and laws governing animal welfare and shelter operations.
- Draft Documents- Draft and review contracts, agreements, policies, and procedures to ensure legal clarity, accuracy, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Legal Representation- Represent the animal shelter in legal proceedings, including litigation, mediation, and administrative hearings, as necessary.
- External Collaboration- Collaborate with external legal counsel, government agencies, and animal welfare organizations on legal matters affecting the shelter’s operations and initiatives.
- Legal Education- Educate shelter staff and volunteers on relevant legal issues, rights, and responsibilities to promote compliance and mitigate legal risks.
- Stay Updated- Stay informed about developments in animal welfare law, legislative changes, and emerging legal issues affecting animal shelters, and provide proactive guidance to shelter management.
- Active Advocacy- Advocate for legislative and policy changes to improve animal welfare and support the mission of the shelter at the local, state, and national levels.
- Legality and Standards- Maintain confidentiality and ethical standards in all legal matters and interactions on behalf of the animal shelter.
- Call Availability & Crisis Response- Have 24-hour on-call duties in a rotation according to the schedule. Answer crisis calls coming into the legal advocate office.
- Recordkeeping and Follow-Up- Maintain file-keeping, data entry, analysis, and mail for the legal advocate office. Provide regular follow-up with clients to ensure that their needs are met.
Performing other related duties as required to support the operation of the animal shelter and the welfare of its residents.
Knowledge of:
- Proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Office, email, and presentation software.
- Familiarity with typical office protocols, methods, and equipment.
- Knowledge of safety protocols and adherence to safe working.
- Skill in maintaining precise record-keeping.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors or Masters degree from an accredited law school.
Required Background, Experience and Skills:
- Total of 5+ years of experience practicing law, with a focus on animal law, nonprofit organizations, or related areas preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of animal welfare laws, corporate law, regulations, and best practices.
- 5+ years of expertise in legal research, writing skills, analytical, and analysis, including case law, statutes, and regulations.

By leveraging legal expertise and advocacy skills, the Legal Advocate ensures that animals are protected from neglect, abuse, and exploitation, while also working towards enacting policies and legislation that promote their well-being.
